My seniors, 12 years in the making, Noelle Bell Photography

This is a very special year for me.  A year that is here by the grace of God and because I obeyed the Lord many years ago and let go of what I never wanted to let go of.  To tell you the story, I’ll have to take you back to when I first came to Knoxville, TN.  Suffice it to say this is a story with length so I’ll leave out a few things, like how God brought me to TN, but when I arrived in the fall of 2003 I began looking for a way to work with the youth in the area.  I had previously worked with the youth in Lynchburg, VA for about 12 years, and my college degree at Liberty University was Church ministries with a concentration on Youth Ministries.  I never felt the call on my life to be a pastor (Lordy you don’t want this crazy child to lead them in that role), but I had a clear calling for youth my sophomore year at Liberty.   Being a part of their life,  loving on them, doing fun and crazy things with them, (like Wal-Mart at midnight just for kicks) and just being there to do life with them.  I could share so many stories.

The Lord closed all doors to youth ministries to me here in Knoxville when I arrived and began looking for a place to serve.  Youth for Christ, Young Life, Fellowship’s youth group, and many other places.  I was pretty lost, so unsure of why God was closing all these doors.  When my small group leader, Dee, asked if perhaps God was calling me to a period of rest – well surely I didn’t need rest…why would He need me to do that?  But then again, He was.  When I finally got that through my head and said okay God I’ll rest, I had peace and knew He was calling me to that, even if I didn’t understand the why of it.  Little did I know that He had plans of His own just around the corner.

Summer came and with it Children’s ministry!  The church began asking for leaders for each grade and my friend Ken came to me and asked if I would work the same grade with him so that if either one of us wanted a weekend away we could go and one of us would still be there for the kids.  Okay, sure.  So we started with this group of rising 1st graders.  Benji, Olivia, Nathan, Katie, Naomi, Carissa and others who have come and gone through the years.  I never really knew that there was anything beyond the summer for me in this ministry and I loved these kids dearly, but this was a God thing and there were many more pieces yet to be discovered in this story.

That summer came and went and then the next summer Ken and I decided to do it again and keep the same kids so we had the rising 2nd graders.  This again did not register as any kind of a God story until the summer was winding down.  There was a desperate need to have leaders for the children’s ministries team.  It took me some time to finally respond to the tugging of the Lord on my heart to serve.  It wasn’t high school, but I had a relationship with the kids after two summers and in no time it grew to a deeper relationship including the parents as well.

I began to take the kids on outings, and yes the parents trusted me with their kiddos’, which to me was such a privilege and SO MUCH FUN!  Movies downtown were fun with some of the boys who all opted to get suicide soda’s – aka…a little bit of soda from each of the soda fountains tap (yes a combo of Coke, Diet Coke, Sprite, Dr. Pepper and whatever else was there). Can we say sugar rush!   All of these were fun even when we went to Mast General Store afterwards and I let the kids get even more candy.  (I’m such a good aunt!)  It’s a wonder those parents let me take them out again after getting their sugared up children back.

And there were soccer games to attend.

And then getting being invited to the “North Knoxville gatherings” as the “west Knoxvillian”, and becoming more involved with the kids and the parents in a fun and laid back setting.   I had an in as most of the kids there were the kids that I had in Sunday School.

And the journey continued into their 5th grade year.  Right before I got married and when my soon to be husband and I took 4 of the kids out to a movie and then ice cream and then took them home.  I’ll never forget “The Wheels on the Bus” by Carson and his many many made up verses to the song, and Brittany’s steel nerves as she sat in the back seat quietly not saying a thing.  I think i learned how far it really was from west Knoxville to his house that night!

My wedding rolled around and 4 of the kids came with their families.  I was thrilled to have them there and their families attend.

Then began their middle school crazy years.  I must admit I’m not a fan of middle school changes and the extreme amount of energy the kids have and I think I know that God has NOT called me to work with that age group.   I was going back to school for photography at that time, so I was the “photographer” during those years and held no formal title or role in their lives, but watched two dear ladies (Mandy and Tracy) love them well.  I was blessed to be able to watch them grow and still be a part of their lives.  Those years however, were the beginning of a huge change for me.  I had loved photography for a long time and had never taken the advise of my parents to pursue it until now.  This was finally the time and I knew right away that a change was coming.

I knew I wanted more time to spend with the kids at events and just time to be a part of their busy lives as they began high school.  However working a full-time job, part time job photography,  youth group as well as family and more.  It was becoming too much.  I was offered severance to leave the wonderful job that I had been at at Scripps Networks for the past 8 years, and I knew this was the right move.   After prayer and deliberation with my husband, the company and my parents, it was agreed and a few months later I made the move to work full-time as a portrait photographer.  I hadn’t full decided to mainly work with high over the years.

So all of that to finally arrive at this year, Summer of ’15, where these kids that have been a part of my life for 12 years,  7 years, 4 years and some a number in between, these are my kiddos’!  I love them and this summer and this year I have the privilege and joy of spending time with them, creating memories, laughing, drinking coffee, eating Brewster’s ice cream and most fun of all doing creative photo shoots and their specialized senior photos as well.  We have already had 2 outings and a third happens this Sunday.  These kids are truly getting a senior experience that most likely might never happen again, nor could I ever dreamed of having.  So thank you Lord for your unexpected ways, the twist and the turns and the relationships I’ve made along the way.  I’m looking forward to many more fun times this year before you all graduate and head off to college.  I love you all and look forward to photographing you and creating a senior portrait experience like no other with you.

Sage Weber, Bearden High School Senior, Knoxville TN, Noelle Bell Photography

Last Wednesday Noelle Bell Photography had the pleasure of capturing Sage Weber’s high school senior portraits.  Sage has the ability to graduate a year ahead of her class and so she decided to do it.   So this session was a sweet 16, senior portraits and graduation all rolled into one.  Sage, her mom and I traveled to downtown Knoxville and endured the cold weather to capture some beautiful images of Sage.  We had about an hour before the sun went down so we drove around warming up in the car as we went from place to place in the downtown area.   Then we stopped back at the studio for a few close up head shots and fun with all my hats and fur’s!  It was a fun filled evening of laughter, coffee and well, here are two images from the session.  It’s a sneak peek as Sage and her mom are on their way to see the images now!

Can you do senior pictures year round?

Well of course you can do senior pictures year round, and how many seniors in East TN can say they have some snow pictures!  I was born and raised in NJ where when it snowed they might have had a two hour delay as they salted the roads and put the chains on the busses, but we rarely missed school to snow.  A winter day where Knox County High Schools were closed for 3 days made for a great opportunity to head to the mountains and do a photo shoot with my senior spokesmodels. Lindsay was featured yesterday and today I wanted to feature Haven.   What a wonderful time to do senior pictures but when school is out and the roads are good. The snow and a beautiful landscape of the mountains were a great combination and the white snow reflected light everywhere.  Here is a sneak peek of Haven, a class of 2016 senior at Bearden High School who came along and rocked the camera!  I loved the brilliant blue sweater that she brought.  The color really popped on this shoot.

Check this image out.  Talk about confidence and beauty, they both shine through!

More images will come in a few days so start tuned for more stellar images of Haven and the others that were part of this photo session.

A Snow Day in East TN a Fun Day!

For this NJ born and bred girl, I was so excited to take a trip up to NJ and be in the snow, but even better was to drive back to Knoxville, TN and have the snow follow me!  The wonderful thing about East TN is that they are not equipped like NJ is for the snow, so the schools were out for not just one, but 3 days!  I know the high school kids were happy about that.

So after the first day of getting back to work I contacted Lindsay Holt, one of my Halls High school senior spokesmodels, and asked if she would be free to to a photo shoot with me in the snow.  I know hard question, but one of the bonuses of being a Noelle Bell Photography Senior Spokesmodel!  🙂

There wound up being three girls that came with me on Thursday.   It was a gorgeous sunny day where I challenged myself to shoot only with a reflector and nothing else outside.  Here is a sneak peek of Lindsay from the shoot!  I can’t wait to share more of the images.

This year has been great!  Stellar, a year of stretching and growing and pushing myself as well as taking risks that has come to a very fast finish!  From a busy high school senior portrait session to the beginning of my pet portrait photography line.  From 8th grade portraits sessions to beautiful families in the fall season, to beautiful weddings and bridal portraits.   Here are some of my absolutely favorite images from 2013.   And just in case you are counting, I went over 20 images, but I just couldn’t narrow it down more than this.

From all of us here at Noelle Bell Photography we wish you all the best in 2014!

Happy New Year!!

Bohemian Styled Shoot, Noelle Bell Photography Senior Portrait Styled Shoot

In early March Noelle Bell Photography collaborated and put together a styled shoot with a Bohemian theme.  I wanted to capture images of two or three girls and I was looking for a magazine spread feel to the shoot.  I contacted one of my HAMU artists, Suzie of Suzanne Clayton Makeup Artist, and we began running with the idea and the themes, outfits, looks, hairpieces, etc.  Suzie’s daughter, Caitlin, was one of my senior spokesmodel’s last year and so she was the perfect fit for the shoot.  I asked another one of my seniors whom I photographed last year to be a part of the shoot, Katie Ray a senior from Halls High School, and she also joined in.  Then a new friend who is a senior at CAK, Lauren Love, also joined the shoot for awhile as well.

I had located the perfect setting, as I wanted a fair amount of deadness and vines in the shoot, so we went to the Mabry-Hazen house in downtown Knoxville for the location.  The only thing that didn’t cooperate was the sun!  It went behind the clouds, so instead of having a nice sun-flare feel to the images and warmth we had to fill it with the flash and no flare was to be found.  Otherwise, the shoot went off wonderfully!

Caitlin got dolled up with some airbrush makeup and we started with her first dress getting some individual shots.  That allowed Katie to get her outfit chosen and her makeup and hair done so she could join in later.

Once we got Katie in some individual shots, the girls quickly became friends as I had them pose together and they had a good time.

And here are some of Katie by herself!  Loved the feathers for an accessory for her outfit.  It went perfectly!

About that time, Lauren showed up and got her makeup done and then she joined in on the fun for some group shots.

Then the girls got brave and climbed in a tree for me!  I was laughing so hard as it wasn’t that far off the ground but one of them had us in stitches until all three were up there and she had other people to hold on to.  I was such a monkey when I was a kid, and heights don’t bother me, so I don’t often think of asking about heights to a senior or a model, but I prominse they were only about 4′ off the ground.   I really loved the images we captured from this setting.

We finished up with one or two images as it was getting dark, but you can barely see the lights of the town, so we called it a night!

It was a lot of fun, and I gifted the girls with an APP on their phone of the images from the shoot.  The APP is included in all of my senior collections here at Noelle Bell Photography.

Holiday Portraits in Knoxville TN, Noelle Bell Photography

It’s hard to believe that fall is quickly going by and the holidays are just around the corner!  The studio at Noelle Bell Photography has been eagerly awaiting the Holiday season, the tree is trimmed and the set is dressed and ready!  The studio has been playing Christmas music for a few weeks now, and the coffee flavor has even reflected the season!

Some of my good friends and past clients came to help me get some images of the set with their families, and we have had a lot of fun!  We got to utilize the Christmas tree, presents and even the Christmas bear was a hit!  The BELIEVE blocks were utilized in ways that captured some beautiful images as well!  So here are some of the images from the red and white themed holiday set this year.

Here are a few more of my favorites from the sessions last week with Stacie and Andy Johnson, a couple who’s wedding I had the privilege of photographing almost 2 years ago and they have become good friends as well as clients.

And here is one of my favorite’s from the Christmas set we took with the Hotchkiss family!  Nathan spelled every single one of these letters, but he really wanted that iPhone for Christmas…hint hint dad, he’s bound to be a tech-guru!

And here’s one more with the BELIEVE blocks.

Have you taken your Christmas pictures yet?  If not and you are looking to schedule a session, please contact me via email, through my website, or you can just fill out the form below to schedule your holiday pictures today!  Candy Canes treats are available at all sessions!

We look forward to seeing you soon in the Noelle Bell Photography studio for your holiday portraits!
